First Flash Mob a Success

Committee volunteers coordinated Topeka's first ever Live United Flash Mob on Saturday, July 25 at the Farmers Market in Downtown Topeka. For the event, volunteers arrived at a predisclosed location (a parking lot) to receive their Live United tees and directions at 9:45 a.m.

The volunteers consisted of a wide variety of indivudals from various nonprofits (YWCA, United Way and more) to corporations (Payless ShoeSource and Capitol Federal), community groups (Chords & Oil) and several community activists. All total, at least 21 adults and about a dozen kids showed up to spread the Live United Message - to Give, Advocate and Volunteer.

At 10 a.m., the group concealed their Live United tees under their clothes and made their way into the crowds of the Farmers Market. At a signal, one of the volunteers unzipped her hoodie and placed it on the ground and froze in place. One by one, each of the group did the same. They froze in place, in silence for 2 minutes.

Passers by gave odd looks, children inquired to their parents, and people wondered what this group was doing. At the commence the two minutes, the group said not a word, but quickly concealed their shirts and disappeared into the crowd.

Some onlookers located a few of the flash mobbers thanking them and asking questions. It was through this interaction (and a few thumbs up) that the volunteers knew their message was being received.
